How do I add a DMCA Protection Badge to my Website?

 

 

To add a DMCA Protection Badge to your website simply:


  1. register first - Website Badge registration it's free. Costs you nothing and you get a complete list of all your protected pages. Protected Pages are all your website pages that have the DMCA Protected badge on them.
  2. once registered - log into the DMCA ProtectionPortal.
  3. Go to "My Protected Pages" and
  4. click "Add New Page(s) to My Protection Plan"
  5. Pick a Badge you like, Note: if you do not pick the badge code when you are logged into the Protection Portal none of the pages your badge choice is placed on will be indexed to your DMCA.com Protection account.
  6. copy the embed code, and
  7. paste it either in the footer of your website (to protect all pages with that footer), or on certain pages you want protected.
  8. Badge code embed best practices:

    1. make certain the DMCA.com code is "viewable" within the source code of your webpage
    2. do not remove the GUID or Unique alphanumeric tracking and status page code.
    3. do not remove the status page link. better users see your protection status than the DMCA.com home page.
    4. make certain the webpage(s) you are placing the badge on is free of validation errors. Check your webpages through a markup validation service
    5. Get Verified Status by far the best option for your website is to have a fully verified website certificate and status page. The website certificate and status page is connected to your Protection Badge.

  9. Every page that contains a DMCA Protection Badge will be automatically added to the your protected pages list.
  10. New web pages with the DMCA Protection Badge are detected instantly and generally appear in the secure DMCA Protection Portal Protected Pages list within 24 hours after placing the DMCA Protection Badge on your webpage.
  11. Placing the DMCA.com Protection Badge on your webpage triggers the DMCA.com crawling / indexing systems to come check your page as it is requested.


Notes on indexing:

  1. However, most new web browsers cache the badge and so it may not be actually requesting the badge from each page that you visit as your browser is likely caching our protection badge, therefore not queuing the page for for crawling/indexing.
  2. With DMCA.com's Free Protection Badge service indexing is also page traffic dependent. Some pages may index slower if they do not have user traffic. To test simply refresh a low / no traffic page and check the index.

Confirm it works!


The DMCA.com Protection Badge Security crawler must be able to do the following or the certificate will remain "Unavailable":


  1. access the page
  2. parse the source code of that page
  3. locate a badge on the page
  4. get a HTTP 200 response from your site

A tool like this web-sniffer.net/ can be used to test whether or not our crawler will be able to locate the badge.

  1. place a webpage URL where the badge HTML has been added (or should be added) into the web-sniffer.net/ utility
  2. click submit, you should then see a bunch of html code appear at the bottom of the page.
  3. If you click 'ctrl=f' and enter search term "dmca" then you should find our badge in that html code. If you can't find find it there, our crawlers probably can't either.

A tool like this www.webconfs.com/http-header-check can be used to test whether or not your website server is responding with the right header.

  1. place a webpage URL where the badge HTML has been added (or should be added) into the www.webconfs.com/http-header-check utility
  2. click submit
  3. a ideal response should be ' HTTP/1.1 200 OK => '

  1. Can I add the same Protection Badge to all my websites?

    1. It is best practice to create a separate DMCA account for each website needing protection.
    2. Each Protection Badge HTML code should be different for each of your websites / web domains

  2. Is there a limit to the number of webpages that can be Protected by the DMCA Protection Badge?

    1. There is no limit to the number of websites or webpages the DMCA Protection Badge can be added to.

Troubleshooting


  1. How long until my webpages with a Protection Badge are listed under "My Protected Pages"?

    1. New web pages with the DMCA Protection Badge are detected instantly and generally appear in the secure DMCA Protection Portal Protected Pages list within 24 hours after placing the DMCA Protection Badge on your webpage.
    2. Placing the DMCA.com Protection Badge on your webpage triggers the DMCA.com crawling / indexing systems to come check your page as it is requested.     3. Non-verified page indexing will take longer and is often queued. Indexing of Non-verified or NON Protection Pro pages generally takes 24 hours. In some cases Non-verified pages may take up to 48 hours.
    4. Verified page (Protection Pro clients) indexing is not queued and is prioritized over the FREE service. Indexing of Verified Protection Pro pages generally takes less than 2 hours. In some cases depending on page volumes it may be longer. If after 24 hours your Verified pages are still not indexed in your protected pages list please contact DMCA Support through your case system.

  2. What if after the appropriate indexing time if I still cannot see any Protected Pages in my list?

    1. make certain the protection badge HTML code on your website / webpage is the exact same HTML code on the badge version located on the badges list when you are logged into the DMCA Protection Portal. They must match.
    2. Only copy the badge version you want for your website when you are logged into the Portal. Once logged in all the badge codes are updated to match your account.
    3. make sure your protection badge HTML code is in the source code of your website. If you cannot view the badge code when previewing the source code of your webpage your webpage will not be indexed.
    4. the badge HTML code must be part of the URL webpage source code for it to be listed on your Protected Pages list.
    5. If you find a page on your website that isn't listed in your Protection Pages tab - push ctrl+f5 to force a full page reload. This should cause your pages to get queued and processed. Normally this process happens automatically as people visit your pages.
    6. make certain the webpage(s) you are placing the badge on is free of validation errors. Check your webpages through a markup validation service
